I use pheasant tail fibers more than standard dubbings to imitate the bodies of these deadly dry fly patterns. The frilly nature of pheasant tail barbules trap air bubbles and naturally sparkle, closely imitating that of natural mayflies. The thorax is designed and imitated by dubbing blends to closely imitate the color of natural insects escaping their nymphal or pupal shucks.
